Posting DLI data to WebCT for use in class.

Situation

A lab instructor for a large Research Methods class has inquired about possibly using DLI data for their labs. Given the large size of the class, the instructor would like to try to use small subsets of a survey to correspond to specific research methods. The instructor would post these subsets onto WebCT for the students to use during the labs. The students would complete small assignments during class time and submit them at the end of the class period. Only registered students would have access to the file.

Assessment

Is the user authorised?

Since the students are enrolled and using the data in a course at the university, the users are considered authorised. The added verification of authenticity through WebCT confirms that only authorised users can access the data.

Is the proposed use within the licence?

The students are using DLI data for educational purposes. This would fall under teaching in the licence and therefore deemed acceptable.

Decision

Approved

Justification

This case was considered and approved. The users of the data are registered students in good standing at the educational institution and the data will be stored under WebCT with controlled access by IP recognition and password. The data will be used for teaching, which is an acceptable use of DLI data.
